What Does this thyroid Test Result Mean?

I just received lab results: TSH level 5.79H,; T4 Free 0.7Lvitamin B12-597, Folate,Serum-14.6, I have lost alot of the hair on my head, and am 5ft 9 inches tall, and weighed 129.2 lbs at my last DR.'s appt. in July 2015. My father's family has alot of thyroid problems, and he had Hashimotos's thyroiditis, and had a partial thyroidectomy when he was young. My older sister has to take synthroid. I want to know if I need thyroid medicine, too... what do you think?

Hello,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Health Care Magic. I read your query and I understand your concern.

As I see from your blood test report, you have a low level of thyroxine and a high level of TSH, which indicates an under-active thyroid. The high level of TSH indicates that your pituitary gland produces more TSH in an effort to stimulate your thyroid gland into producing more thyroid hormone. The hair fall you are experiencing maybe a sign directly related with the hypothyroid condition.
In order to determine the etiology of hypothyroidism, I would suggest you to have an ultrasonography of the neck and assays for anti–thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) and antithyroglobulin (anti-Tg) antibodies.
With such a presentation on my clinic, I would recommend my patient to start treatment with Levothyroxine. Since it is a prescribing drug, I would advice you to seek consult with your local endocrinologist.
Regarding your Vitamin B12 and Folate level, I would say that they are in their normal range.

Hope I helped you with my answer. For further concerns or follow up questions, feel free to ask again.

Wishing you good health,
Dr. Ina
